This project served as an exercise in composing for science fiction media, with influences in mind like the Dune films and the Mass Effect video game series. I wanted to display my ability to program orchestral instruments in a midi setting, as well as combining them with tailored synthesizers and pads to create a familiar, yet other worldly sound scape. I also used effects that I learned whilst composing my Ambient Confusion project, such as drones, to create a moody ambience underlying some of the pieces. I also wanted to cover a wide variety of moods, with Flight I and II serving to score a more light-hearted theme of space exploration. For these pieces my cultural influences shifted to things like children’s science fiction media such as Wall-E, and science fiction comedies like The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. The title piece I wanted to be on a more epic scale, with large percussion hits and heroic themes of adventure being the focus of the piece. I also bridged the gap between classical and synthesized instruments using the sound of a bowed vibraphone, which meshed nicely with elements of both sides. I wrote themes for individual instruments and reused them at different points in the piece to add coherency, but in visual media these would be used to signify or prelude the appearance of certain characters or objects on screen.
